Juanita García can still recall the smell of the freshly grilled burgers her parents used to buy her at the late Sunday afternoon tardeadas in Weslaco and Hidalgo. Tardeadas were afternoon gatherings often held at town parks where families danced and listened to local conjunto acts in the 1950s and ‘60s. Juanita said her father, Cristobal García, spent most of his time on the dance floor with his wife Guadalupe.
